Events and Outreach

  • SOTSEF 2025

On 15th March the University of Southampton hosted their annual Science and Engineering Day. This year the event welcomed over 5,000 visitors to the University to celebrate all things science!

SOTSEF was a great chance for us showcase our work and empower members of the public to get involved in our active research projects. It also provided a fantastic opportunity for our Master’s and PhD’s students to explain their research to the wider community.

Thank you to everyone in the Microbial Interactions lab and University of Southampton Public Engagement team for organising the event.

  • Winchester Science Centre Outreach Event

To celebrate British Science Week the Phage Collection Project was pleased to exhibit at the Winchester Science Centre’s Outreach event alongside other colleagues within the School of Biological Sciences.

Throughout the day we had the opportunity to share our research with over 300 school children! Many phage models were built to help fight the superbugs that were hidden around our exhibit.

Thank you to Nikhil and the rest of the team at Winchester Science Centre for organising and hosting this event for us.

  • The New Forest Show 2024

On 30th July we were fortunate to exhibit at the New Forest Show where we showcased our new engagement activity ‘The Ultimate Phage Quiz’.

This event enabled our team to gain insightful information about the public’s opinions and views on phage therapy. It was also exciting to see everyone get involved with our Phage Hunters activity – providing us with many samples across the show site, which we are now analysing back at our lab.

Thank you to everyone that visited our stall and got involved! We also want to thank the Wessex Medical Research team for providing us with the opportunity to exhibit at this event.

  • Southampton Pint of Science 2024

Daniela, one of the PhDs in the Microbial Interactions lab, delivered a talk at the Southampton Pint of Science event all about antimicrobial resistance and the power of phage therapy.

It was also a great chance for Daniela to discuss her work on KlebPhaCol - an open resource expandable biobank for Klebsiella targeting phages.

Thank you to the Pint of Science team for asking us to participate in this event, and to Dani who gave a great talk!

  • SOTSEF 2024

On 16th March the Phage Collection Project took part in the University of Southampton’s Science and Engineering Day.

This outreach event was a great opportunity for the team to meet members of the local community and increase awareness about antimicrobial resistance and phage therapy.

Thank you to the University’s Public Engagement Team for organising and hosting us at this event. We look forward to exhibiting again next year!

  • Educating the South Coast

On 9th May 2023 Daniela and Thomas, two PhDs in our lab, gave brilliant talks to Bishop Wordworth’s School.

Students got to learn all about the phages that reside in out gut and how bacteria can defend themselves against these viruses!

During a round table discussion Daniela and Thomas also spoke about their academic journeys from the start of the bachelor’s degree all the way through to their PhDs.

Thanks so much to Bishop Wordworth’s School for having us!

  • School of Biological Sciences Outreach Festival 2023

On 22nd March the University invited local students, teachers and community groups to Highfield campus to learn all about the research our scientists are conducting. At this event we showcased the Phage Collection Project, alongside our educational resources - ‘Exploding Bacteria’ and ‘Build A Phage’.

Thanks so much to the School of Biological Sciences for involving us in this event and to PhD student Ruweyda Sayid and Masters student Rachel Buchanan for organising the activities!
